Upgrade of the Elvas - Fronteira Section of the Linha do Leste (Eastern Railway Line) (2018 - 2020)

Rehabilitation of the M31 Wall in the Entrecampos - Chelas Section of the Linha de Cintura (Cintura Railway Line) (2020 - 2021)

Completion of the Slope Stabilisation on the Régua - Ferrão Section of the Linha do Douro (Douro Railway Line) (2021 - ongoing)

The Upgrade of the Elvas (PK 264+050) - Fronteira (PK 275+611) Section (length: 11 km), of the Linha do Leste (Eastern Line), corresponded to an investment of EUR 20.4 million, and consisted of the following main interventions:

  • Expansion, adaptation and redesign of the Elvas Railway Station layout (to allow 750 metre long freight trains to manoeuvre);
  • Complete renovation of the track superstructure (rail, sleepers and ballast);
  • Improvement of the railway platform (drainage, stabilisation of slopes and construction of support and containment structures);
  • Installation of infrastructures for future implementation of electronic signalling (ETCS and GSM-R) and overhead line remote control, and construction of overhead line blocks for future electrification;
  • Construction of road underpasses and resurfacing, to eliminate the four (4) level crossings;
  • Replacement of decks and reinforcement of abutments and pillars of the Caiola and Caia railway bridges. The Rehabilitation of the M31 Wall in the Entrecampos - Chelas Section, of the Linha de Cintura (Cintura Railway Line), corresponded to an investment of EUR 0.5 million, and consisted of the creation of 2 horizontal reinforced concrete beams fixed to the wall in question and between the 3 existing anchorage alignments. In the new beams, new anchorages with an adequate degree of anti-corrosion protection have been installed in order to guarantee the necessary safety conditions in accordance with the currently applicable regulations. The work took place at night and at weekends in order to keep the railway line in operation.

The Completion of the Slope Stabilisation on the Régua - Ferrão Section (length: 14 km), of the Linha do Douro (Douro Railway Line), corresponds to an investment of EUR 3.5 million, and consists of the stabilisation of 10 slopes. The work is being carried out exclusively at night / with restrictions, and using special railway equipment, lifting and drilling equipment, and mountaineering techniques.

Slope stabilisation, in general, refers to clearing / cleaning, re-profiling, installation of triple torsion and special wire meshes, nailing and geo-draining, the construction of reinforced concrete retaining walls and the improvement / restoration of drainage structures.
